A Day in the Life

"well I just had to laugh"
mid-night bathroom break for baby boy. DH gets up to help him, but he screams for Mommy! Apparently I've got the secret touch when it comes to sitting him on the toilet. I wish I could hand off that distinction. And somehow, when he needs a drink, again, only I am worthy of getting it. grr....

"Woke up, fell out of bed"
wake up. stumble around like a zombie looking for the coffee pot. "Aka, hurry, come on, hurry, we're late for school!" The boy runs everywhere, but tell him to hurry and he turns into molasses.

"and looking up, I noticed I was late"
Drop off Aka, hurry to training day. A bunch of old ladies and me. Is my profession just for old ladies? Am I an old lady and don't realize it?

lunch break at Indian restaurant. Yummy, but old ladies followed me....umm....I planted my nose in a book and pretended not to see them. harsh.

more training, then hurry home and DH asks *me* what's for dinner? Huh? Um, you tell me darling.

"but I just had to look"
In attempt to get into the Christmas spirit, herd the family to living nativity despite protests. "I'm hungry...it's too cold..." (no, that wasn't the kids, it was DH again!) Arrive at nativity, taken in 5 minutes of goats, sheep, and rain and decide to hit the road.

Quick trip to HEB to get lights for tree (only thing we don't buy!) and then home to watch a movie.

And now you know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.

Blog shout-out

Gwen Bells best of '09 challenge continues, and here is my next attempt at sporadic participation. Today's asks about the best blog you've found this year.

*internal dialouge* Hmm...should I say mine or is that too obvious? What, oh, you heard that? Oops..

Ok no. Well, there are many great blogs out there but the ones that bring me back consistently are few. Not because of a lack on their part, but because I have 2 kids, 2 jobs, and a reading list a mile long already. I'm busy ok!

One favorite that I'd like to mention is The Non-Consumer Advocate. Katy discusses all aspects of living under The Compact. Simple and frugal living, green ideas, and money management are just a few of the topics she covers. Although I don't particapte officially in the Compact, the ideas behind it have definitely influenced me in my own spending habits and turned me into a Goodwill addict. I heartily agree with Katy's adage, "Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without."

Check it out and let me know what blogs you can't miss.

Something rotten in the state of Denmark?

Copenhagen is in the news right now, and of course, all sides have something to say. Sitting in the car waiting to pick up Aka, I had the unfortunate experience of tuning in to a talk show on the FOX radio network. I'm not sure honestly who it was that was speaking. Anyway, for the sake of my sanity, I didn't listen long, but what I heard was enough to make me want to bang my head on the steering wheel....repeatedly.

Of course, that probably wouldn't do when you're sitting in the pick up line at school.

The speaker was of course talking about his doubts about climate change. Although I find it a bit silly that climate change and environmental issues have to become political, that's not what bothered me. I'm all for discussion....

"The Thighmaster is neither a thigh nor a master...discuss." See?

What really left me flabbergasted was his claim that climate change and the Copenhagen talks are all about punishing the rich nations to benefit the poor. Climate change is a way for the UN to institute a worldwide tax and redistribute wealth. World-wide socialism, egads!

I guess I'm just so sheltered; this is the first time I've heard such crazy talk.

In the end, whether you believe in global warming or not, can anyone really doubt that pollution happens and our country's out-of-control consumerism is a leading contributor? So, fine, doubt away that the world is getting warmer, but how can one still keep their head in the sand and allow all this destruction to continue. It's disgusting.

And now I really am getting all verklempt.

*for the 1 or 2 others who read this besides me, my husband, who worries about these things, would like it to be known that I was quoting from Mike Myers in this post and therefore not violating copyright law of any kind.

Yes, I am serious, he actually brought this up as a potential problem.

Books are a girl's best friend

Decided today to participate in Gwen Bell's "Best of 2009" blog challenge

I was planning to write about books soon anyway, so let's do this thing! So, the topic is a book that I read in 2009 that touched me. I've read a lot of books this year, 60+, but sad to say that there aren't a whole lot of those that stand out to me or left an impact where I can remember them without reviewing my goodreads shelves. That said, I think the best reading experience I've had this year has been rereading "The Mouse and the Motorcycle" with my 6 yr old, Aka. I have been itching to move into chapter books with him, and this year we did. I have all sorts of ideas about how I want to brainwash my 2 hapless minions, and instilling a love of books is definitely near the top of the list.

(Ah, see how nice it sounds when you say "instilling" something rather than "brainwashing"?)

Although in many ways Aka is a mini-version of DH, minus the constant worrying and most of the OCD habits, reading together is something that allows us to connect. I love hearing this little boy's opinions on books that I read and loved as a child and I usually love hearing him say, "One more chapter, please!!!!!" I've got so many old favorites that I can't wait to share with him. Right now we're reading the Little House on the Prairie series, which "isn't just for girls!" as he told his friend the other day. After that, he wants to hear more about the Indian in the Cupboard and then we've got to read The Borrowers. Big plans, big plans for 2010.

But back to the Mouse and the Motorcycle....it's a bromance featuring a rebellious mouse with a jonesin' for pb&j and a desire to join the Hell's Angels. What more could you want?

Eat mor chikin

Dropped off Aka at school today, and as we pulled through the drop-off line, guess who was there to greet him? None other than the Chick-fil-a cow, dancing around and waving to all. Ahh, how nice. Not. :( I want school to be a commercial free zone. I'm sure Chick-fil-a is a fine establishment, and I do appreciate their in-door playground on mornings that I meet my friend Maria there for breakfast, but I'd rather not see that dancing cow first thing in the morning. Was it dancing to ward of the cold, or maybe it hadn't been milked this morning? I don't know.

I work hard, and not altogether successfully, to shelter my kids from the barrage of advertising. These poor deprived children don't even know about Saturday morning cartoons, aside from PBS's meager Saturday offerings. Isn't it strange that PBS has kids shows on almost all day during the week, but on Saturday they finish up by 9, or maybe it's 10. My kids sleep late, so they usually just see "Animalia" and then "This Old House" comes on. Maybe Aka can pick up some house remodeling tips. Anyway, I know these boys need to learn about commercial messages and how to discern what they are really saying, but we're not quite there yet. Actually, me and Aka do talk about it sometimes. It's strange to me how people can get so worked up about, for example the President speaking to kids or saying the word "Christmas" at school, but yet don't complain about bookfairs filled with toys and non-book items and all the other pushing of commercial products that subtly appears as time goes on. So maybe I should look at that dancing cow as an opportunity to discuss.

Or maybe I should just go buy a chicken biscuit.

Bootylicious

I've always known that my brain is not very functional. I'm what you call "book smart" but I have a hard time analyzing the information I pick up. It's hard for me to take a strong stand on postions because I'm afraid I could be wrong and someone will be able to prove it easily, making me look stupid.

Ok, here's some positions I'm willing to make.

Mac n' cheese is one of the foods they serve in Heaven.

TV is like that machine in The Princess Bride; it sucks your life away. (but Friends reruns and American Idol have some inherent value surely)

FOX news bad; NPR good; Jon Stewart brilliant.

My grandma's chocolate chip cookies can't be beat.

Running is so trendy and overrated.

Evangelical Christian is not synonomous with Republican.

There are too many business majors out there.

Austin is the coolest city in Texas.

Little boys can not be deterred from talking about poop.

I don't think you're ready for this jelly....
